What to Do When Your Partner Won't Go to Couples Counselling

Why Reluctance Is So Common

Refusal to attend counselling is rarely really about counselling itself. More often it's about what going might mean: an admission that things are seriously wrong, discomfort with talking about feelings in front of a stranger, or a fear of being blamed. Understanding the reluctance is usually more productive than pushing against it directly.

What Tends to Help

A calm, specific invitation tends to work better than an ultimatum. Framing it as wanting support for the relationship, rather than fixing your partner, and choosing a low-pressure moment to raise it, both make a real difference. It also helps to be clear that counselling isn't about assigning blame.

You Can Still Start on Your Own

If your partner genuinely won't attend, individual counselling is still a legitimate and often effective option. Working through your own patterns, communication style, and expectations can shift the relationship's dynamic in ways that sometimes open the door to your partner joining later, even if that's not the primary goal.

What You Can Do in the Meantime

Attending individual counselling on your own, while you wait for your partner to come around, is a genuinely useful option rather than a consolation prize. It gives you a space to work through your side of what's happening and often reduces the pressure you're putting on your partner to attend — which can, ironically, make them more willing over time. It's also worth being clear about the difference between a partner who's nervous and one who's refusing to engage with a real problem; the first often responds to time and reassurance, and our post on couples counselling vs. marriage counselling can help if terminology is part of what's holding them back.

If you're navigating this alone for now, individual counselling with Matt at Redlands Counselling Service in Capalaba is a genuine place to start, with or without your partner.
